How much does a Euro pallet weigh?
About 25.3 kg in pine. The breakdown species by species, and how that figure is reached.
The short answer
A new EPAL Euro pallet in pine weighs about 25.3 kg. It contains 20 pieces of timber for a volume of 45.2 dm³.
Weight varies above all with the species: at identical geometry, poplar and oak do not have the same density. The table below gives the calculated weight for each of the species PalletLab handles.
Weight of a Euro pallet, species by species
| Species | Density | Pallet weight |
|---|---|---|
| Poplar | 420 kg/m³ | 19.0 kg |
| Spruce | 450 kg/m³ | 20.4 kg |
| Douglas fir | 530 kg/m³ | 24.0 kg |
| Pine | 560 kg/m³ | 25.3 kg |
| Larch | 590 kg/m³ | 26.7 kg |
| Beech | 710 kg/m³ | 32.1 kg |
| Oak | 720 kg/m³ | 32.6 kg |
EPAL 1 geometry (1200 × 800 × 144 mm, 22 mm boards, 145 × 100 mm blocks), volume 45.2 dm³. PalletLab calculation, timber dried to 12% moisture content.
How this weight is calculated
No ready-made lookup table: the weight is the real timber volume multiplied by the density of the species. The volume comes from the bill of materials: every board, every runner, every block, with its dimensions.
Two honest caveats. First, moisture : a pallet straight from the sawmill can weigh 15 to 20% more than a dry one, as the water leaves during drying. Second, the nails, about 351 g on an EPAL, counted separately. A used pallet is generally heavier than a new one: it has taken moisture back up.
And the other formats?
| Model | Dimensions | Volume | Weight (pine) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPAL Euro pallet | 1200 × 800 mm | 45.2 dm³ | 25.3 kg |
| EPAL 6 half-pallet | 800 × 600 mm | 25.7 dm³ | 14.4 kg |
For a non-standard format, the weight is recalculated on every change of dimension. That is precisely what PalletLab does while you draw.
